Identifying and Communicating WOW
Monday, May 19th, 2008The nonprofit world is very competitive. There are over 1.5 million nonprofits in America and all of them share a few things in common. One of those commonalities is the need to attract quality staff, volunteers and donors. But with such steep competition, how do you interest the cream of the crop in your organization? The answer is WOW factor. Somehow you distinguish yourself from the rest and communicate that distinction in a memorable way.
My friend Mike Hyatt, CEO of Nelson Publishers, recently spent a day-long retreat with his executive staff discussing how to identify and cultivate WOW. He recently blogged on the subject …
A few weeks ago, I met with my executive team for an all day planning meeting. As we began the afternoon session, I asked them to think of two “wow moments” they had experienced in their lives. I asked them to “get present” to those experiences and then jot down what they observed. I gave them about ten minutes to work on this exercise on their own.
Then I asked each person to share the experience that was the most powerful. One person shared about the birth of a child. Another shared about the first time he kissed his wife. Still another shared about seeing Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe for the first time. It was amazing. You could see each person’s face light up as they shared. The rest of us vicariously entered into their joy.
Next, I asked the group to try an identify the common attributes in each of these experiences.
