Working Down-under
Wednesday, July 12th, 2006G’day mates!
A week ago Lucie and I traveled to New Zealand and Australia to work with Young Life “down-under” - we’ll be down here for another 2 1/2 weeks. The email access is spotty so blog updates will be few, but I wanted to share a bit while I had the chance. Nonprofits here are called “charities” here and, due to the socialist economy, philanthropy is enemic. Very few people give beyond a few hundred dollars a year and there are virtually no private foundations. Everyone is conditioned to rely on the government for most all of their needs. The pros and cons of such dependence are plain to see.
Still, New Zealand and Australia are wonderful places. It’s winter here and the weather is damp and cold, but the people are warm and very welcoming. I’ll try to add another couple updates as the opportunity avails.
